The Gold Humanism Honor Society recognizes students, residents and faculty who are exemplars of compassionate patient care and who serve as role models, mentors, and leaders in medicine. Members are peer nominated and are the ones that others say they want taking care of their own family. Since its inception in 2002, Gold Humanism Honor Society has grown in influence to become a vital part of medical school and residency training program cultures throughout the US.

Zakaria Chakrani, or Zak, is an exemplary student who epitomizes what it means to care for the whole patient. Rather than simply focusing on patients' clinical aspects, Zak takes a substantial amount of time to sit down with the families, discussing their concerns and building trust and fosters open communication. Zak's deep compassion and genuine concern for his patients are evident in his ability to identify their unspoken needs, ensuring their comfort and privacy during difficult conversations. He not only strives to improve their physical well-being but also considers their emotional and mental health. In addition to his remarkable patient-centered care, Zak is dedicated to enhancing healthcare equity. He continually learns, engages with challenging topics, and displays a level of empathy that sets an example for others. His commitment to both patients and fellow medical students' well-being is admirable. Zak's kindness, genuine care, and unwavering advocacy for his patients make him a compassionate and considerate future physician.
